Planning a hens party can be like planning a mini-wedding.  You have guest lists, venues to book, transport to find, activities to arrange, costumes to wear, and the list goes on and on…  Now this used to a huge task but thanks to technology we now have the means to make things easier.  Here are a couple of recommendations for making your life a whole lot easier:

1.  Facebook – set up an event and invite all your friends in one go.  The guests can RSVP online and you can email updates as you go.  The limitation of this is if friends are not on facebook they can often get left out!

2.  Use a hens party planner service.  There are a number available online, but my favourite is from Hens Party HQ.  This service allows you to invite guests, send out updates, location maps, add photos and generally just set up your hens party all in one location.

Ready your engines girls for a ride to remember…  If you want a sexy theme with lots of interaction and something faast moving then this is the perfect hens party theme for you!

Start the party with your best race car outfits (think Charlies Angels) with low zips and tight fitting race suits, add a bout of go-karting for some adrenaline and then hit up a local bar or club for some ‘flaming lamborginis’ or similar cocktails.  This theme is also perfect for any activity that involves competition or racing, and can be complimented by handing out drinks in mini-trophies for a complete theme.

The other benefit of the racing theme is that guys LOVE women and cars, particularly when they are together so you are sure to make some new friends for the evening if you want to flirt, dance or just have a laugh.  So get racy.

Runway 9 - Go Karting
Another activity for the more adventurous hen, go-karting is an opportunity to get competitive with your friends and race to be the best driver.  This is a great hen party idea to get the adrenaline pumping and to create a real buzz amongst the guests.  There is something intangible but exciting about racing around the track with each other.  End the day with champagne to shake and drink.

You can also add this activity to a weekend away or better yet with a whole race car hens party theme.  Have all the girls get dressed up in their sexy driver outfits with zips low (think Charlies Angels) and hit the town to celebrate the winner and crew.

Hens party - PaintballIt seems to me that women get the short end of the straw when talking about activities some times.  When I was younger I went away on a camp and we had a girls or boys only day.  Each group was then offered a number of activities – us girls were offered shopping or a cooking class.  The boys were offered abseiling and white water rafting.  Can you believe it! But what it made me realise is that there is no reason why us girls can’t enjoy getting in there as much as the boys and in fact can even play alongside them just as well.

That is why I really enjoy the paintballing experience.  First off it gives you the chance to get out of town and into the country, and secondly it is a great day to challenge yourselves and get the blood pumping.  Find comraderies with your new found friends and then chill out together afterwards by a roaring fire and some good red wine.  Believe me this is a great day in action.

Why have just one night for your hens party when you can have a whole weekend?  After all this is meant to be your last hoorah, and if you are going to do it then you may as well do it right!  But just be warned straight off that if you are going to take this route that you really need to put some time into doing it so that everything flows well.

The main things to do:

Choose a location that fits your overall theme – classy, adventurous, relaxed or wild.

Choose a place to stay that can be accessed relatively easily and preferably has a communal area where you can all easily convene.  The worst situation is all trying to squeeze into someones room for group events.

Get out and about by choosing an activity in your area that you can all get involved in.  Yes, a relaxing weekend can drinking wine late into the night and sleeping in, but even a walk out can be great.  But for those you wanting a bit more excitement I would recommend paint-balling, horse riding or even go-karting.

Organise transport – this is particularly important as everyone has different commitments and getting there together can be a nightmare if not planned.  The same goes for any transport while you are away.  Just try getting 20 women to the bar from a cottage in the country without advance planning!

Finally consider budget and be upfront early on about costs.  You don’t want to be lumbered with all the costs as people forget to pay or are put out by unexpected fees.

Other than that you can do what you like so get in there and have fun!

The problem with organising a beautiful wedding day is that it takes a lot of time, money and effort from all involved.  Particularly the bride and her bridesmaids.  It is for this reason that the pamper party is such a successful hens party theme.  Set amid the rush and fatigue of planning lies an oasis of calm and relaxation in your own home and allow the bride to prepare herself for the big day both mentally and physically.

There a number of ways you can run this depending on your time and budget.

The first is to get in a pamper party specialist.  Very much like a tupperware party, a host will come along and allow you all to try various products that are on offer and treat each other to simple manicures, pedicures and even facials.  This takes virtually no organisation and the cost is set by each guest as they decide on products they would like to buy.  The added benefit is that the bride will often get a percentage of all purchases to buy some products for herself.

The second option is to run your own pamper party at home.  While this does take more effort it is also more personal and less restricted with times or the need to buy anything.  You can get the other guests involved by bringing their favourite products to share, or bring in a beautician or a massuer that can treat the girls throughout the day while the rest of you give each other manicures and the like.

Either way this party is all about the relaxation so set up your home with candles and music and really chill out..

Right, so going away for a few days isn’t exactly an option but you’d still like to treat your friend to a memorable experience. A spa pamper party ends up doubling as preparing your friend for her big day – the bride is often given extra attention and certain treatments can be thrown in as a bonus.

By making a group booking you minimise the stress of having to plan an entertaining itinerary, as these themed spa experiences take care of the day for you. Don’t forget about all the additional facilities such as plunge pools, saunas and steam baths that will allow you to relax and enjoy some quality time with your friends, either before or after therapists takes care of everybody’s grooming needs. Not only that they’ll provide healthy snacks and treats for all of you to indulge into.

Hens Party Games - Fold me a story
Many of you may remember this game from your childhood, but funnily enough a lot of hens party games originate from this time – except with a slight twist here or there.  In this game you will need several pieces of paper and pens and a little bit of imagination.

To play give each guest a piece of paper and ask them to write one line of a story with the last couple of words on the second line.  They must then fold the paper over to hide everything but the last words and pass the paper to the next person.  The next person then writes another line, folds the paper and passes it on.  This continues until everyone has written a line.

At the end you will have a bizarre story written by the group which the hen can keep.  I like to add a theme to this if possible so it directly relates to the bride or the guests, etc.

Tried and tested Karaoke is one of those hen party ideas that will always be a staple of any hen event.  The reasons for this is numerous:

  • It provides a challenge for the girls
  • It creates a buzz of expectation, anticipation and in some nervousness!
  • It can bring the group together while singing songs together and overcoming their inhabitions
  • It is simply a lot of fun

The other benefit for Karaoke is that it can be done at home or at a Karaoke bar so you can do it anywhere.  Grab the girls and get absolutely wild – and of course you HAVE to sing ‘Girls just want to have fun’!

Hens Party Themes - The STEN Party

Hens Party Themes - The STEN Party

There is a new movement that I have noticed in recent times and that is the emergence of a new kind of hens party – The STEN.  For those of you that have not heard of this it is actually a combination of a Stag and a Hen Party.

Now obviously this is not for everyone, as it kind of removes the whole ‘last night of freedom’ thing.  But on the upside it can be the perfect event for people with a lot of the same friends and those that are not into the usual hens party event anyway.  The other benefit is that there really is no set format or style so you can pretty much do anything that you want – except for strippers I would imagine!

However, for those of you that do not want to lose your hens party I would suggest a mixed approach where part of the party will either start or end with the groom and his friends.  This will allow for the couple feel and for friends to mingle, but also provide the focus and dedicated time that every bride to be should enjoy before marriage.

I will be writing more on this topic in the coming weeks so stay tuned.

This hens party game takes a little bit more preparation prior to the hens party but is well worth it.  Basically you will meet up with the groom prior to the evening and videotape him answering a number of questions about himself and the bride to be.  The bride is then asked the questions herself on the night and then his answers are played back immediately following to see if she was right.  This can be used as a fun interlude or also as a drinking game by adding forfeits and shots to the bride for incorrect answers and given to the other girls if she gets the answers right.

A slight variation that I like is to also have the groom ask the questions to the bride on the tape as well.   Here are some sample questions:

  • What do you think is the grooms best physical feature?
  • What do you think is brides best physical feature?
  • Who picked up who and how?
  • What frustrates you the most about each other?
  • What is his favourite position?
  • What is each others most annoying habit
  • Who is his favourite artist, sportsperson or the like?
